Gifted Learners

How are children identified as gifted?

Most school districts in Ohio identify students as “gifted” if data supports superior cognitive ability and/or superior skills related to math, reading, creative thinking, and even visual arts. Children are typically screened for gifted and talented in 2nd and 4th grade. However, it is everyone’s (parent, teacher, friend, family member) responsibility to refer children who may be gifted. Children who are gifted present with a unique set of problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. As a result, it is very important to identify these students early on. When students are in a class that is not academically challenging and stimulating, they can display challenges in a multitude of areas. It is also common to see behavioral differences and challenges within the home.

I think my child is gifted. What’s next?

If you believe your child may be gifted, it is recommended that you first contact your child’s school to determine if they have already been screened for gifted services. If they have not, it is recommended that you make a request to the district of residence for your child to be screened for gifted services. If your child has been screened but has not been identified as gifted and you believe that the gifted screening assessment did not capture your child’s true abilities (screeners do not always capture the whole profile), it may be time for a private gifted evaluation. I partner with families to comprehensively explore cognitive functioning as well as academics so that a full picture of skills is captured. I take great pride in linking all students with the most appropriate education that they require. If you would like to learn more, I encourage you to contact our practice for a consultation.
